EU REACH Regulation Annex XVII Added BPA Restrictions

      On December 13, 2016, the European Union issued its EU Gazette (EU) 2016/2235, Annex XVII of the REACH Regulation 66, on the Limitation of Bisphenol A (BPA), formally incorporating BPA into the REACH Regulatory Restrictions List. It is stipulated that thermal paper containing bisphenol A (BPA) ≥0.02% should not be put on the market since January 2, The regulations will enter into force on day 20 after the official communiqué and apply to all Member States.
 
       According to regulations, thermal paper from the base paper and at least one layer may contain bisphenol A coating composition. Coating exposure at high temperatures will change the color, so that the printed characters appear. As a result, workers (mainly cashiers), especially pregnant workers and consumers, have the risk of exposure to bisphenol A when exposed to thermosensitive tape.
 

       According to (EU) 2016/2235, Article 66 is added to Annex XVII of the REACH Regulation, as follows:

       Bisphenol A (BPA) scientific name 2,2-bis (4-hydroxyphenyl) propane, is a low toxicity chemicals, with a certain degree of embryo toxicity and teratogenicity, plastic bottles and other plastic products in the bisphenol A may affect Infants and young children of the growth and development, and children's brain and sexual organs caused damage. BPA is mainly used for the production of polycarbonate, epoxy resin, polysulfone resin, polyphenylene ether resin, unsaturated polyester resin and other polymer materials. Can also be used for the production of plasticizers, flame retardants, antioxidants, heat stabilizers, rubber antioxidants, pesticides, coatings and other fine chemical products.
